Unit Price Sam's Club comparison DISH SOAP

 One of the ways that I save money is by buying in bulk at Sam's Club.

Here is an item that I buy at Sam's Club in bulk to save money.

Dish Soap. I can save money some weeks by couponing but for those weeks that I am not able to coupon I have a gallon (128oz) jug that I can refill my kitchen bottle from. I pay $5.98/gal and that is equal to $0.046 per ounce. Let's call it $0.05 per ounce.

Dish Soap at Walmart. I can get Ajax 14oz for $1.24 or $0.088 per oz that we'll just call $0.09 per ounce. This is the cheapest option for Walmart.

I suggest you buy a bottle of soap at the store and then buy the gallon from Sam's Club and refill. By doing it this way, with these prices this is what you'll pay if you buy both bottles and then just refill vs buying just the Walmart bottle every time.

Refilling is $1.24 for the Ajax plus $5.98 for the gallon. That equals out to $7.22 for 142 oz. In order to get the same amount of dish soap you'd have to buy 11 bottles of the Ajax for a total spent of $13.64. Refilling would save you $6.42. After you purchase that original Ajax bottle your cost is actually going to drop to $5.98 for 128 oz refill and 10.24 for a new bottle ever time.

Let's say you go through 12 bottles of dish soap a year, I go through more because of my family of 4, here is your cost breakdown:

Buying 12 new bottles for year 1 will cost you $14.88, year 2 is $14.88.

Buying 1 Ajax and refilling from the gallon for a total of 12 bottles will cost you $13.20 for Year 1 BUT Year 2 is going to cost you $5.98 only because you are coming into Year 2 with 102 oz left over from Year 1 to get you started. 

Now to break this down into total unit price refill is going to run you $0.05 per oz and buying new will run you $0.09 per oz. I know that those 3 pennies are not noticeable in your budget but as we are clawing our way out of poverty every single penny counts.
